LinkedIn Streamlines Premium Subscription Plans & Raises Prices

LinkedIn has recently made changes to its premium subscription plan, including a price increase, to convert some its 332 million registered users into premium subscribers. In the third quarter of 2014, LinkedIn reported that only 20% of the company’s revenue comes from premium subscriptions, for a total of $114 million.

It looks like LinkedIn wants a bigger piece of the pie, so it has streamlined its premium subscription plans, reducing more than a dozen options into four clear value propositions – job seeker, networking, recruiter or sales professional – says CIO.com.

As of January 1, 2015, new and renewing subscribers have these four options:

  • Free 30 day trial
  • $29.99/month
  • Send 3 InMail messages monthly
  • Be a featured applicant
  • See who’s viewed your profile in the last 90 days & how they found you
  • Compare yourself to other applicants

LinkedIn Premium Options

Insider Take:

Previously, LinkedIn offered too many options that were often difficult or time-consuming to decipher, let alone master. This may have turned off casual users or those curious about the premium plans. With four clearly-defined subscription plans, LinkedIn users can easily see what features are available to meet their needs. With a free 30-day trial, there is no risk for professionals to upgrade from a premium plan.

What is still unclear, however, is what other products and services are available. For example, when viewing the Recruiter Lite package, prospects have to scroll past the premium features to find the tiny print – “Learn about our full suite of Talent Solutions” – wedged between the features list and the FAQs. Once a LinkedIn member clicks on the link, he or she must request a free demo, so it isn’t clear what’s available or how much it costs.

While we love that LinkedIn has put the four primary options in a color-coded, easy-to-understand table, we recommend they make their ancillary – and most expensive – products available. This could improve conversions because those with simpler needs will see they are getting a deal, while professionals and companies with greater needs would easily see what’s available.
