Netflix added 1.69 million subscribers in the second quarter of 2014, largely in part to the release of the season two of “Orange is the New Black” and World Cup coverage, according to reports issued by the streaming video giant. That puts Netflix total subscriber base above 50 million, an impressive feat for a subscription site that was struggling to hang on to subscribers a few years ago and already has significant market share. Most of the growth was from international subscribers (who were particularly attracted to World Cup coverage). While Netflix’s 570,000 new domestic subscribers beat the company’s prediction by a solid 50,000, the company added 1.2 million international subscribers. That puts their domestic subscriber numbers around 36.2 million and international subscribers at 13.8 million. It’s worth noting that Netflix does not offer an international DVD service, so growth in international markets (which could be substantial) would be due to the streaming video services alone. The company also posted net income stats boasting a huge increase to $71 million from $29 million share a year ago.
