Last year, Tennis Channel got 125,000 downloads of its free Tennis Everywhere app, that allowed for free live streaming of the French Open. This year, the company is creating a paid subscription service for the same market. For $59.99 annually or $9.99 for a one-day pass, Tennis Channel’s app will “give subscribers access to 300 live matches from 40 tournaments around the globe, including a multi-court mosaic from Paris encompassing some 70 matches over an eight-day span.” The service also includes more than 1,000 hours of on-demand viewing of original content and classic tennis matches, like Roger Federer versus Rafa Nadal, Chris Evert against Martina Navratilova, and Pete Sampras versus Andre Agassi. The independent network currently has 35 million annual subscribers, and 50 million during its expanded freeview period during the French on DirecTV and Dish. But access via an app is a smart move as more consumers show signs of cord-cutting and expect to be able to live stream almost anything on digital devices. In fact, one in four US households now subscribe to Netflix, and one fifth of videos watched on Netflix are now TV shows, up 8% from last year and indicating cord cutting is on the rise.At the same time, licensing hurdles remain for many online TV providers, but subscription models are almost always a better bet than a la carte payment methods.
