Navigation Links On Your Subscription Site: Less Can Be More

Over at our sister site, Subscription Site Insider, I just finished up producing an SEO Toolkit for Subscription Sites.   Although I have been studying search engine optimization for years, one tip we presented was a good reminder to anyone with any kind of site – be sure to limit the links on each page of your content to fewer than 100. That includes header, footer, in-story, and navigational links .. all of which add up…

Online Publishers: Does It Make Sense to Segment Your Social Media?

A post on All Things Digital today about their new social media program got me thinking. While segmenting social media isn’t a new idea (for example, you can follow specific sections of a newspaper like @NYTimesTravel on Twitter), I love the way All Things Digital presents their new social media options. Just like with a segmented email list, you can choose the topics you are most interested in. Is this something that might work for…

The graphic below from our Dating Site Benchmark Report shows that the #1 acquisition marketing tactics for dating sites in terms of total gross numbers of new accounts is member referral or tell-a-friend. Our latest Subscription Site Insider Case Study reveals how ContractorSelling.com uses video testimonials as both content and an effective conversion method.  At the end of the weekly email that ContractorSelling.com sends to non-members and members alike, owner Joe Crisara runs a “Member Spotlight”. The Spotlight is really more of a testimonial – with a link to a video testimonial (hosted on YouTube) along with a typed excerpt of what the member had to say on the…

Paywalls Are Hot: Even The Onion Is Testing A Paywall

Paywalls are hot in the online publishing world. So hot that even The Onion is testing a paywall, according to Paid Content. The “fake news” humor publication is using a metered Model and requiring non-U.S. visitors to pay $2.95 per month or $29.95 per year to access more than five stories in 30 days. An overlay (see our Case Study on overlays used by Dow Jones Local Media) appears when five stories are reached. The Onion…

Get Your Email List to Think Twice About Unsubscribing

I got an email from ProFlowers.com yesterday. I love their service but I order flowers a maximum of two times a year so regular emails don’t do much for me. I thought it was time to clear them from my email inbox, so I scrolled down looking for the “Unsubscribe” link. Instead I found the nicely named “Email Preferences” link and clicked on it. The wording on the top of the page nearly convinced me NOT…

Our newest, exclusive Subscription Site Insider Case Study reveals how Dow Jones Local Media Group uses overlays to turn newspaper visitors into paying online subscribers. Although 99% of online dating sites use overlays to garner more email opt-ins and free registered users, it’s not a tactic we see used very often by mainstream subscription publishers. So we were thrilled when Insider Member Kurt Lozier, SVP Dow Jones Local Media, offered to share his early-stage test results…
