Like MLB.com, NFL Launches Digital Subscription Service, But Focuses on App and Set-Top Boxes

For years, Major League Baseball has been turning a pretty penny through its online subscription site MLB.com. Now the National Football League is looking to rack up similar digital revenues. The NFL just launched NFL Now, a video freemium app available through mobile, desktop, and a variety of set-top boxes. The app is taking advantage of new digital devices (which are paving the way for paid content sales through convenient and lean-back viewing) and marketing automation to create…

World of Warcraft, the massive multiplayer online game, lost 800,000 paying subscribers between April and June of this year, according to financials released by the game’s parent company Activision Blizzard. That drops the site’s total number of paying subscribers to 6.8 million, down from the 7.8 million it had on March 31. That’s definitely a precipitous drop, but Activision Blizzard says the downturn is seasonal; it had experienced a similar drop last year ahead of it release of…

Gmail’s Promotion Tab Leads to ‘Decrease’ or ‘No Change’ for Email Open and Click-Through Rates

We previously wrote about how Gmail’s new “Promotions” tab is actually increasing click-through rates for some email marketing emails, even while decreasing open rates. But our own research of more than 70 subscription marketers provides data that argues the contrary. Specifically, our new Email Marketing Benchmark Report asked subscription marketers and digital content publishers about how Gmail’s new promotion tabs had affected their open and click-through rates. As you can see in the chart below, the large majority…

Google Searching for Subscription Revenue with Twitch Acquisition and Google Maps B2B Play

CORRECTION: The story incorrectly reported that Google bought YouTube, when in fact the sale was only rumored at the time.
