Even though email marketing is the #1 marketing tactic for acquiring new subscribers, there are little industry benchmarks for subscription and premium content publishers. Most of the email stats out there are concerned with use content marketing to sell products and services, not content itself. SaaS Subscriptions Require Long-Term Access for Expired Subscribers

Adobe just announced this week that it plans to make photos available to users of its Lightroom software even if they should cancel their Creative Cloud subscription. Overall, this is a smart move from Adobe. Lightroom allows subscribers to edit and catalog photos, but the subscription-based model made many former Adobe fans wary that canceling a subscription would lead them to lose all their pictures. Such concerns could easily lead to consumer backlash (remember the Netflix debacle when…

Case Study Lessons: Create Multiple Newsletters and Gift Offers to Engage More Audiences

General consumer sites often suffer from TMI — they offer too much information for a consumer to digest. Yet, because the information is general in nature, most B2C sites don’t think to create niches for their information. Consumer Reports, one of the gold-standard publications for subscription marketing, didn’t let this narrow thinking hinder it from creating nine separate newsletters to offer site visitors and subscribers. The newsletters can vary from “What’s New” to health topics. Each has its…

A new service called Unroll.Me is making it easier for your email subscribers to unsubscribe. The service allows a consumer to login to his/her email account and manage all subscriptions to all email newsletters and promotions. But the most interesting fact is the unsubscribe rates Unroll.Me has released. Notably, 15 brands had unsubscribe rates higher than 40%, and one of those was membership site Angie’s List, which is sometimes considered the gold standard in gated paywall models. Our 2013…

Having trouble increasing your subscription sales? Invent a device that does half the work! That’s mainly because of “Firefly”, Amazon’s new service that lets users point to real-world objects and automatically load the items into their shopping carts. Low on toothpaste? Just point your phone to…

Vaporvue launches this week, a subscription site with on-demand access to streaming video of extreme sports like surfing, skiing, and snowboarding. The service launched with a $9.99 monthly subscription and $99.99 annual price. Filmmaker Ira Opper started the site, which will stream movies, documentaries and TV series on multiple devices, including Roku, desktop computers, iPhone, iPad, smartphones and tablet. Design Thinking, Not Great Design, Is the Answer to Your Problems

Like any modern-day editor, I’ve worked for a my fair share of websites. Some of them have been beautiful, well-designed sites. Some of them have not. And you want to know what I’ve learned? Great design does not guarantee profits. In fact, a poorly-designed site can be highly profitable if it’s content is valuable to its readers and its business model makes sense. However, design thinking is vital to staying financially prosperous in today’s disruptive media market. And…
