Through a series of bills, Maryland is looking to establish an online sales tax for digital goods — including content and dating sites. While it’s unsure which exact bill will pass, digital products in Maryland will likely include music, audio books, eBooks, audio greeting cards, ring tones (or other digitized sound files), online newspapers, magazines, periodicals, chat room discussions, and images (the last two implicate dating sites particularly). NY Times Subscription Model Hailed A Success: Fact or PR?

Surprise, surprise, the New York Times paywall works! Or so the pundits say. On the second anniversary of the paywall’s implementation, NYT boasts 390,000 digital subscribers, 30% higher than their internal benchmark, and Ken Doctor estimates that brings in $86 million in revenue for the Gray Lady. However, that 390,000 number seems a bit inflated, with NYT giving print subscribers access to digital content for free. Management seems particularly gleeful that the paywall has increased home-delivery rates,…

Paid Content Popular With 50% of U.S. Tablet Owners, But Not for News

How To Get Member Site Traffic From Optimized Press Releases

Greg Jarboe gave a great Webinar talk this past week through our sister site, Subscription Site Insider, about how you can optimize your press releases to pick up search engine traffic. After an investigative report by NBC4, Ohio’s Attorney General’s office says it’s taking action to examine complaints about automatic enrollment in online membership sites. The complaints seem to center around a company called Affinion, which offers consumers “discounts” during their online checkout process based on a recurring billing charge for membership to a number of programs run by Affinion, such as Shoppers Advantage and Traveler’s Advantage. One Affinion employee claims the company’s customer service center…

Last week, Major League Baseball launched a new app called “MLB At Bat” to much fanfare and critical acclaim. But MLB also did something interesting by changing its pricing plan.
